So I jumped online this morning and noticed that the field of 10 teams for the Softball World Series is starting to take shape. So far, the following regions have qualified teams:
Central: Sterling, Illinois
Latin America: Maunabo, Puerto Rico
West: Westchester, California
Oregon District 4 (Host): Beaverton, Oregon
East: New City, New York
Asia-Pacific: Muntinlupa, Philippines
EMEA (Europe): Milano, Italy
We are still waiting for a Southwest champion (they just started their tournament), a Canada champion (they start 8/3), and a Southeast champion (they end on the 2nd).
Travel along with me on a one-in-a-lifetime trip as I umpire the 2011 Little League Softball World Series!

Getting Prepared
So many of my friends and family have asked if I will have some way of communicating on my trip, and I decided to take a page out Lee Batterman's playbook and start a blog for my trip. I kept a blog in 2007 when I was selected to umpire the Junior Softball Regional Tournament, so it shouldn't be too difficult to keep one for this trip.
I leave on Monday, August 8th in the morning. Of course there will be meetings and orientation before the tournament begins, but games are not scheduled to start until Thursday, August 11th. I return on Thursday, August 18th (which happens to be the first day back for students at my school!)
In lieu of making pins I decided to take gift with me for the umpires. Some of the local leagues in my district have been great at helping me out. My district will be giving me pins and hats to take, my local league will be giving me hats, one other league gave me money which I will put towards my gifts. I got duffel bags for all the umpires with their names and "2011 Little League Softball World Series" embroidered on them.
I have had the opportunity to work some sectional and divisional games that my district was hosting. I've been lucky enough to work a lot of four-man rotations in the post season, seeing as that is what we will probably be running during the tournament.
I plan on updating this more and more as the time draws closer. I hope to see some of you at the regional tournament in San Bernardino before I leave!
